Voyah Free Is An Advanced And Classy Chinese EREV SUV

This is Voyah Free, an advanced Chinese SUV with an EREV powertrain. I met this great-looking example on a car market in east Beijing. It is painted in a classy color called Jade Green, with darkened headlights and a big old shiny grille.

Voyah (岚图, Lántú) is a high-end NEV brand under Dongfeng Motors (DFM). The Voyah brand was launched in 2020. Voyah sells three cars: the Voyah Free SUV, the Voyah Passion sedan, and the Voyah Dreamer MPV.

The Voyah Free is a pretty car with a clean design. It has a chrome strip below the windows, subtle roof rails, recessed door handles, and turbine-style alloy wheels. The Voyah Free is a five-seat car. The size is 4905/1950/1645, with a 2960 wheelbase and a 2270 curb weight.

It has the VOYAH name on the D-pillar, in silver on a black background.

This particular car is a 2023 Voyah Free AWD Ultra Long Range. The extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) all-wheel drive (AWD) powertrain combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged ICE with two electric motors, one at the front and one at the rear, and a single-speed gearbox. The 1.5 turbo doesn’t drive the wheels, it only functions as a generator for the battery.

Combined output is 360 kW and 720 Nm, good for a 200 km/h top speed and a 0-100 in 4.8 seconds. The Free has a 56-liter fuel tank and a 39 kWh CATL ternary lithium battery. The combined range is a massive 960 kilometers and the EV-only range is 205 kilometers.

The interior is luxurious. This car has a Light-brown/Blue color scheme. The screen seems like a one-piece unit but it consists of three separate 12.3-inch screens, one for the instrument panel, one for the infotainment, and one for the passenger’s entertainment. The drive selector is on the center tunnel, with two cup holders and a wireless charging panel.

Note the seatbelt alarm stoppers. I guess the kids don’t like to buckle up. The Free is equipped with a Dynaudio 10-speaker sound system. Dynaudio is a Danish loudspeaker maker, a very popular supplier for Chinese NEV brands at the moment. The Free’s L2 ADAS system has 24 sensors and no lidar, which is a rather basic setup for a luxury vehicle in China.

The 2023 Voyah Free AWD Ultra Long Range sold for 333.600 yuan ($47K). In late 2023, the Free received a facelift, with a slightly updated design, a new 1.5 turbo, and an updated ADAS system. More on the updated Voyah Free in a later post.
