They WEY VV5 Is A Cool Compact SUV From China

WEY is likely the coolest Chinese car brand of the moment, far cooler than the hopeless pretenders at Lynk & Co. The smallest WEY currently available is this fine looking VV5, here painted in white with a black grille, black wheels, and darkened windows.

WEY is a ‘premium SUV’ brand under Great Wall Motors. It was launched in 2016, and the WEY VV5 arrived in 2017. There is only one version available, whereas the larger WEY VV7 comes in a standard and in a sport version.

Price starts at 150.000 yuan and ends at 163.000 yuan. WEY keeps its pricing very clean, and that is a good thing. Too many Chinese automakers go for messy numbers like 158.988 or 108,899.

The WEY VV5 is powered by a 2,0 turbocharger four-cylinder petrol engine with 197hp and 355nm. The engine is mated to a seven-speed DCT, sending horses to all four wheels.

The interior is a beauty, but a bit too black for my taste in this particular car. The instrument panel is digital and the touch screen is extremely thin. It is also a tad too small for 2018. The center tunnel looks very clean.

Black roof, black roof rails, and black window frames. Four fat exhaust pipes take care of the music.

The WEY logo depicts the flag tower in front of the city hall in Baoding city, where Great Wall is based.

There is a lot ado about the word Poating, under WEY. We have since found out that the word has been misspelled (!!!). It should have been Paoting, which is how Baoding was spelled under the old Wade-Giles pinyin system.

WEY likes that old system, because the very word WEY is  also Wade-Giles. In today’s pinyin it would be wei.  It refers to Wei Jianjun (魏建军), the founder of Great Wall Motors.

The error in Paoting/Poating has been noticed by many, and WEY was completely ridiculed for it on the internet. But so far they haven’t changed it yet.

Note the V5 in the license plate.
