Beijing Jeep BJ2022JL Prototype In Shanghai

Beijing Jeep BJ2022JL

An ultra rare Beijing Jeep BJ2022JL prototype, seen in Shanghai in 2014 by Antoine Chalendard. The BJ2022JL was one of the many proposals for a successor to the BAW BJ212 army utility vehicle.

The BJ2022JL was designed developed by the Beijing-Jeep joint venture in 1999, and powered by a 3.2 liter turbo diesel. There was also a five-door version, called the BJ2022JG. In the end, the army decided to go for a bigger vehicle and went for another Beijing-Jeep proposal: the BJ2022 Brave Warrior, powered by the same engine. Production

The production contract for the Brave Warrior went to BAW, and it was sold under the Beijing-brand. Over the years, BAW launched dozens of military and civilian variants, and the Brave Warrior is still in production today.

One Beijing-Jeep Cherokee I Almost Bought

Before I bought my Beijing-Jeep Cherokee BJ7250 in 2004 I checked out several other vehicles, most of which were other Cherokees. It was my favorite. Most second-hand cars were sold in giant open-air markets.

It was there that I found this great Beijing-Jeep Cherokee, painted in factory purple and powered by the 4.0 liter six and with four-wheel drive. It had very old blue 京A license plates and it was modified with a slightly raised suspension, big wheels, and shiny alloys.

My Beijing-Jeep Cherokee XJ When I Just Bought It

In December last year I posted a long post on my 1998 Beijing-Jeep Cherokee BJ7250 City Special. I took those photos in 2013. After some digging I found a set of photos of my Jeep in November 2004, nine years earlier, taken on the very first day she was mine. I proudly stand behind the door.

Here we have my very own Beijing-Jeep Cherokee BJ7250, photographed in Beijing on a cold and smoggy winter’s day.

It was 16-01-2013 and I took my Jeep to the Agricultural Exhibition Center in Beijing. Back in those days you could drive your car straight up the main hall when there wasn’t any exhibition. No way today! Anyway. I parked my Jeep bang in front of the main hall.

A very Early Beijing-Jeep Beijing BJ2020 N In Blue

Beijing-Jeep Beijing BJ2020 N

The Beijing-Jeep joint venture, or fully the Beijing Jeep Corporation (BJC), is best known making the Jeep Cherokee XJ and Jeep Grand Cherokee in China. But this busy joint venture also manufactured the Beijing BJ2020-series, based on the long-running Beijing BJ212-series.

The BJC badge on the grille.

The idea was to use American technology to gradually improve the BJ212/2020. The blue car we have here, which I saw in 2006 in Yunnan Province, is a Beijing-Jeep Beijing 2020 N.

The N model was the second improved variant of the BJ212 made by BJC. It was launched in 1990. Compared to the BJ212, it had better brake ad cooling systems, new mirrors, new lights, and new wheels.

It was powered by the 2.4 liter Beijing 492 QA engine, good for 70 hp and 160 Nm. Transmission was a four-speed manual, four-wheel drive. With that, the 1530 kilo heavy vehicle could reach a top speed of 100 kilometers per hour.

Mistubishi Outlander Police Car In China

Mistubishi Outlander

A very neat Mitsubishi Outlander police car in Beijing, capital of China. The first generation Outlander was manufactured by Beijing-Jeep. This odd arrangement dates from the days of Daimler-Chrysler, which also held a stake in Mitsubishi.

Chrysler had the long-running Beijing-Jeep joint venture in China, producing the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee. Daimler-Chrysler added the Chrysler 300C, the Chrysler Sebring, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the Pajero Sport, and this Outlander to the line-up.

White license plates are used by police, paramilitary police, and the armed forces. The black character on the left is jing, short for Beijing (北京). The character on the right is another jing, short for Jingcha (警察), also see bonnet, and that means police.
