The Changan UNI-K iDD Is A Cool PHEV SUV In China

Changan UNI-K

This is a Changan UNI-K iDD, as seen in the Chinese capital Beijing in the summer of 2023. The big SUV looked brand new, painted in an interesting green-gray shade with light gray alloy wheels.

‘UNI’ is a line of high-end cars under the Changan brand, which is owned by Changan Auto. UNI sells 3 cars at the moment: the UNI-V sedan, the UNI-T SUV, and the UNI-K SUV. The ‘iDD’ affix means that this is the PHEV version of the UNI-K.

The Changan UNI-K launched on the Chinese car market in 2020, powered by a 2.0 turbo. The iDD PHEV launched in 2022. It is an impressive-looking car with a wild grille and small side windows. It has pop-out door handles, chromed window frames, and red brake calipers. I quite like the design, it looks expensive and sporty at the same time.

The interior had loads of luxury too but the screens show the car’s age. Time flies in China, and newer Chinese SUVs have way more advanced screen setups. The UNI-K’s instrument panel sits in an od pod located far atop the dash. The main screen is 12.3 inches, which is comparatively small.

The rear with a brake light in the roof spoiler, a car-wide light unit, and shiny exhaust pipe tips. The iDD PHEV powertrain combines a 1.5 turbo with a single electric motor and a 6-speed DCT. Output is 320 hp and 590 Nm. Impressive power but the PHEV models are front-wheel drive only, so traction might be an issue.

The top speed is 200 km/h and 0-100 is gone in 8.1 seconds. It has a 28 kWh CATL battery and a 53-liter fuel tank. The EV-only range is 135 kilometers.

The UNI-K SUV is available from 187,900 yuan or $25.8K.The UNI range is quite popular in China and Changan is busy expanding the range with more cars, including another sedan and a 3-row SUV. The upcoming UNIs will be NEV only.
