A very pink Volkswagen New Beetle, seen in central Beijing on a cold winter’s day. The good Beetle is painted in a very neutral shade of pink. It isn’t shiny, and neither is it matte.
Darkened windows, with a cutout so the driver can see the mirror. The Volkswagen New Beetle was manufactured from 1998 until 2011. It was sold in China as an import and surprisingly successful, especially among female folk. Sales in China started in 2004 and ended in 2010. The convertible was available as well, and Volkswagen sold it in a factory light-pink shade!
The base model was available with a 2.0 or a 1.8 turbo. There were no engine badges on this car, but looking at the alloys and bumpers this seems to be a 2.0 model, with 115 hp and 172 Nm. Price, in 2008, started at 225.000 yuan. This was crazy money for such a small car but still, it sold. The next ‘new’ Beetle, which was called Beetle, never achieved the same success in China.
