Buick Electra E7: China-only PHEV With A 1600-KM Range

Here’s a Buick Electra E7, seen earlier this year at a Buick dealer in west Beijing. The Electra E7 is a China-only SUV with a front-wheel drive PHEV powertrain. It looks pretty sharp for a Buick, especially in this cool Golden Sand Rice color scheme. The car had just arrived from the factory, and I had a good look around.

About Electra

Buick Electra E7

Electra is a sub-brand of Buick. Earlier, Buick used the Electra name for a series of electric cars. The sub-brand operates more independently, with its own marketing and PR. The Chinese name for Electra is 至境 (Zhìjìng). The manufacturer is the SAIC-GM joint venture.  The E7 is the second Electra car after the Electra L7 sedan. The Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) designed and developed the Electra E7 specifically for the Chinese market. PATAC is an automotive R&D center, jointly controlled by SAIC and General Motors.

Buick is holding out reasonably well in China, much better than any other non-Chinese brands. In most months, the Buick brand hovers between the 18th and 25th spot in China’s sales rankings, out of 102 brands. In July 2026, it sold exactly 22.999 units, good for the 22nd spot and a 1.57% market share. That month, the Electra E7 became Buick’s second-best-selling car, after the Buick Envision Plus. Buick launched the Electra E7 in China in April 2026, so its rise to second place has been remarkably quick.

The Buick Electra E7

The Buick Electra E7 has a clean and streamlined design, with smooth bodywork and a drag coefficient of 0.265 Cd. The front has a low, almost closed nose, with razor-thin daytime running lights and the main light units lower down in the bumper. Along the sides, the E7 has large wheel arches, flush door handles and a high waistline. The car in the photos is the top-spec “Buick Electra 1600 Ultra Full-Spec Turbo model”.

The roof slopes gently toward the rear, ending in a large spoiler above the rear window. At the back, it has a large roof spoiler and a wide light bar. The shiny wheels look super sweet; the tire size is 235/50 R20. All in all, a surprisingly modern and almost-cool design for a Buick. With a few more cars like this, Buick may have a chance to fight its way back into the Top 10!

The interior of the Buick Electra E7

For Chinese car buyers, the interior is even more important than the exterior – so Buick had to get it right. Well, it did. The cabin of the Buick Electra L7 is typical Chinese minimalistic, devoid of any distracting buttons and switches. The gray color scheme is still a little bit old-Buick; Chinese consumers prefer lighter shades. The drive selector is mounted on the steering wheel column, freeing up space for a 50W wireless charger and two cupholders in the center console.

Buick Electra E7

Tech talk! The Buick Electra E7 has a 50-inch HUD, an 8.8-inch driver’s display, and a 15.6-inch main screen. The operating system is Electra OS, which Buick developed especially for the Electra sub-brand. The system runs on a Snapdragon 8775 chipset. Electra OS supports wireless Apple CarPlay, Huawei HiCar, and ICCOA CarLink. It also features Doubao AI, ByteDance‘s LLM-based AI assistant. Doubao is also the original owner of TikTok and the owner of Douyin.

Buick Electra E7

The Buick Electra E7 is an electric car with a long wheelbase, so legroom is abundant. There’s a 21-inch fold-down screen in the ceiling. It was folded away here, so I borrowed a photo from Buick:

Passengers can binge series or do some work. Sound comes via the car’s 20-speaker surround-sound system, including a speaker in the driver’s headrest.

Specifications

Buick Electra E7

The Buick Electra E7 is based on GM Xiaoyao Architecture, which, again, is a China-specific platform. The dimensions are 4850/1910/1676, with a 2850 mm wheelbase and a 1995 kg curb weight. The PHEV powertrain of the Electra 1600 Ultra Full-Spec Turbo combines a 115 kW/230 Nm 1.5 turbo with a 165 kW/330 Nm electric motor. The transmission is a 1-speed DHT (dedicated hybrid transmission), with front-wheel drive. Buick claims a 210 km/h top speed and 0-100 takes 7 seconds flat.

Combined range is 1600 kilometers, hence the “1600” in the model name. Many Chinese brands put range figures in their model names, making them easy to understand for media and consumers alike. The electric range is 230 kilometers. To get there, it features a 65-liter fuel tank and a 32.6 kWh LFP battery. The battery comes from CATL-SAIC, the battery joint venture between CATL and SAIC Motor. Buick says a 30-80% fast charge takes 15 minutes. Chinese spec sheets are very precise about consumption. Every 100 kilometers, the Electra 1600 Ultra Full-Spec Turbo uses 17.5 kWh of energy and 2.6 liters of gasoline in PHEV mode.

ADAS

The Buick Electra E7 has lidar, part of Buick’s L2 Xiaoyao Zhixing ADAS, which was jointly developed with the Chinese ADAS company Momenta. Buick offers this ADAS only in China. The other sensors include 11 cameras, 12 ultrasonic radars, and 3 millimeter-wave radars. The system provides Urban and Highway NOA (Navigation on Autopilot) and automated parking.

Price of the Buick Electra E7 in China

Buick Electra E7

Note the active aero in the bumper, with flaps that open when the car needs extra cooling. The Buick Electra 1600 Ultra Full-Spec Turbo, as it stands here, costs 199.900 yuan or $29.7 K. The base model, with a 1.5-liter engine and a less-powerful electric motor, costs $23.7 K. That’s a competitive price for what it offers, but the competition is relentless. Examples of the Electra’s direct rivals are cars like the BYD Frigate 07, the Lynk & Co 08 EM-P, and the SAIC-Volkswagen Tiguan L PHEV (which also uses a CATL-SAIC battery).
