Here’s a Tank 400 Hi4-T, seen in the far south of the Chinese capital, Beijing. The color is Nebula Gray; some 90% of all Tank 400 buyers go for this stealthy shade. It also has a large roof rack and a ladder.

About Tank

Tank is a Chinese SUV brand under Great Wall Motors (GWM). The Chinese name is 坦克 (Tǎnkè). GWM founded the brand in 2021. With only four models, Tank’s lineup is surprisingly small.

Sales, however, are pretty good: in March 2026, Tank sold 11.297 cars, good for a 0.69% market share and the 37th spot on the brand sales rankings, just below Voyah and just above Cadillac. Tank’s most popular model is the good old Tank 300, followed by the Tank 400.

The Tank 400 launched in 2023. GWM manufactures the Tank 400 in its Tianjin factory. GWM sells two versions:

  1. 400 (ICE).
  2. 400 Hi4-T (PHEV).

The Tank 400 Hi4-T is a mid-size SUV with a radical off-road-style design, with ultra-wide fenders, a high beltline, small windows, and big wheels. It is a bold statement, different than anything else on the road.

The car in the photos has a Meika roof rack and ladder, which looks brilliant in its off-road-y-ness. Meika is a famous Chinese off-road accessories brand, owned by Hangzhou Green Offroad Auto Parts, aka Green 4×4.

The interior

Unlike most other Chinese brands, Tank sticks with dark-themed interiors. The cabin of this 400 has a Night Black/Moon Shadow color scheme. The owner added black aftermarket floor mats for even more darkness, and he also put cheap covers on the luxurious Nappa-leather seats

The shifter’s design is fantastic! Very manly and old-school. The Tank-themed steering wheel cover is also an aftermarket accessory. The other tech is pretty impressive, with a 12.3-inch instrument panel, a 15.6-inch touchscreen, and a 50-watt wireless charger.  It seems the owner doesn’t need to charge his phone very often, as the mess blocks the cooling ducts.

Specifications of the Tank 400 Hi4-T

The Tank 400 is based on the GWM Tank platform with a ladder chassis. Many Chinese off-road-capable SUVs use ladder chassis, even the newer electric ones. The size is 4964/1970/1905, 2850, with a curb weight of 2950 kg. Why so heavy? Well, it packs a lot of power.

It has an oversized rear spoiler, fiery red rearlights that are also very wide, and a badass Tank-branded spare wheel holder. The wheel size is 265/65 R18.

The PHEV AWD powertrain combines a 2.0 turbocharged engine with one electric motor and a 9-speed automatic gearbox. The system output is 310 kW and 750 Nm. Tank limits the top speed to 180 km/h, and 0-100 takes 6.8 seconds.

The Tank 400 Hi4-T has an 80-liter fuel tank and a 37.1 kWh ternary lithium battery. The electric range is 105 kilometers CLTC, and the combined range is 913 km. Tank claims a charging speed of 103 kW and a charging time of 15 minutes.

The Tank 400 Hi4-T costs 285.800 yuan in China, or $41.8K. This model hasn’t been updated since 2024, so it is getting a bit old. Recently, Tank launched a new variant: the Tank 400 Hi4-Z, with 2 electric motors and 635 kW. But it is also much more expensive, with a $63K price tag.

  1. I wonder these really are used offroad in China or they are mall crawlers like most Wranglers in US.

    1. Most are city crawlers, but there are some clubs that take heavily modified Tank cars to Inner Mongolia in the holidays to hop around the grasslands. I will post some photos later!
