ORA White Cat Was A Cool Chinese Electric Hatchback

Ora Good Cat

This white little wonder is an ORA White Cat. I saw it in Beijing in the summer of 2023. The White Cat is painted in a color called ‘Basic White’ with 3-spoke gray aero wheels and gray A-B pillars.

ORA is an EV brand under Great Wall Motors (GWM). ORA was founded in 2018 and in its early days, GWM had no idea where to go, or what to do with it. There were all sorts of cars with all kinds of price points. In short: a typical mess for a new Chinese car brand.  The ORA White Cat had a super short production run. It was only made from 2020 until 2022. There was no direct successor.

The interior was progressive for the time. The screen looks like a one-piece but it is a two-piece: 7-inch for the instrument panel and 9-inch for the central touch screen. It has a single cup holder and basic multi-color seats. It really was a nice interior for 2020, but vehicle development is going so fast in China right now. If you compare it with a new car in the same segment the White Cat looks like 20 years old.

The White Cat is a five-door four-seat hatchback. It is a small car, with a size of 3625/1660/1530, 2490. ORA offered a confusing number of time levels/motors/batteries. This was typical for the petrol-powered boom era of the 2000s, so strong brands then kind of took their trim-madness into the EV era. They didn’t see, at least not at first, that the market wanted a more simplified lineup.

ORA offered two FWD power trains: 48 hp/125 Nm and 61 hp/130 Nm. Top speed was limited to 102 km/h for both versions. ORA offered 3 battery levels (manufacturer numbers): 29.4 for 305 km, 33 kWh for 360 km, and 36 kW for 401 km.

Let’s do some characters: 欧拉白猫 (Ōulā Báimāo), ORA White Cat.

And this is 长城汽车 (Chángchéng Qìchē), Great Wall Motor.

The ORA White Cat was a good-looking car. I’ve always found it odd that Great Wall Motor killed it after such a short production run. But! That makes the White Cat a rather rare machine to see on the road today, and that alone makes it a cool car.

  1. Hello, this is Watson from ShangHai,
I’m glad that you like the cars in China, you made so many detailed records, I hope you enjoy the chinese growing electric car industry, and let me share our views about this car, this car in our mind is famous but not in a good way, it is famous for the normal engine and the car system, and is listed as an example of “good looking but not functional” and “women and girl will like it”, anyway, it is widely considered valued too much. you can spend the money on BYD or other brand and get a more functional car, but, appearance is something that matters, right?
That’s it, just a share of our view, hope you enjoy your stay in China, Have a nice day.
