A Blue Skoda Felicia LX Combi In China

A nice blue Skoda Felicia LX Combi, seen at the Beijing Agricultural Exhibition Center in China. The good Skoda was dirty and dusty, but otherwise in a fine shape.

The Skoda Felicia was basically an upgraded variant of the Skoda Favorit. The Felicia was made from 1994 until 2001. There was a 5-door hatchback, a 2-door pickup, a 2-door panel van, and a 5-door station wagon, which was called the Combi. There were three engines available: 1.3 and 1.6 petrol, and a 1.9 liter diesel.

It was officially sold in China, but not in the traditional way. They were basically bought by the Chinese government from the Czech government, in deals that were usually part of a much wider bilateral trade deal. Most Felicia’s in China have the 1.6 petrol under the bonnet. Output was 74 hp and 137 Nm. The engine was mated to a 5-speed manual.

In China, state-owned distribution companies would sell the cars to the few lucky ones who had the right friends in high places. When the Chinese car market opened up in the late 1990’s the days of the Felicia were numbered, very fast.

Until about 10 years ago the Felicia was still a fairly common sight on the streets of Beijing. Sadly, today the vast majority of these great Czech cars have been scrapped.

Late 1990’s license plate.

Let’s hope this Felicia is still alive somewhere in China.
