Onvo L90: Battery-Swap SUV With A 575 KM Range And 599 HP

Here’s an Onvo L90 SUV, seen at a parking lot in northern Beijing. The L90 had just been launched when I saw it, so it was brand new, with a temporary license plate number behind the front window.

About Onvo

Onvo is a Chinese NEV brand, launched in 2024. NIO Inc. is Onvo’s owner. This company also owns the NIO and Firefly brands. Onvo’s first car, the Onvo L60, hit the market in late 2024. The L90 SUV joined the lineup in July 2025.

After a slow start, Onvo’s sales increased rapidly. From August 2025, Onvo has been selling more cars than NIO.  In October 2025, Onvo sold 17.342 cars, a new record, and good for the 35th spot in the sales rankings. The L90 is responsible for 67% of all sales, the L60 for 33%.

The Onvo L90

Onvo L90

The Onvo L90 is a full-size six-seat fully-electric battery-swap SUV. The design is fairly understated, with clean lines and no unnecessary frills. It does, however, pack plenty of bling, with shiny strips on the bumpers, around the side windows, and over the doors. This fits with the recent reinvigoration of bling in Chinese car design.

The car in the photos is an Onvo L90 First Edition, painted in Tranquil Mountain Black. This limited-run version came fully loaded with all options and featured a distinctive red badge on the back.

The Onv0 L90 stands on Michelin Pilot Sport tires, an unusual choice for a big SUV. Even more unusual, the tires have a different size: 255/55 R20 at the front and 275/50 R20 at the rear. The 15-spoke alloy wheels look great.

The interior

Onvo L90

The spacious and luxurious cabin is similar to the exterior: understated and without any frills – with Nappa leather seats, aluminium trim bits, and even some wood panels on the dash, center tunnel, and doors. Notice the yellow dealer sticker in the storage bin — this L90 has just rolled out of the dealership!

The L90 packs a lot of interior tech, with a 35-inch HUD and an extra-large 17.2-inch touch screen. Onvo has fitted the drive selector on the steering wheel column. In the center tunnel, it has two air-cooled wireless chargers and two cooled and heated cup holders.

The best place in the cabin is the second row, with two wide captain’s seats. They’re heated and ventilated and offer a massage function, tray tables, leg and footrests, and armrests on each side. Passengers also get an 8-inch screen between the front seats and a 17.3-inch rear-entertainment screen. In the photo, the big screen is folded up against the ceiling, so here’s another shot showing it in action.

The third row with two spacious seats. Onvo equips the L90 with an Onvo Sound audio system with 23 speakers and a massive 2048W output. Audio systems are a new battleground in China’s hyper-competitive car market, with brands outcompeting each other with the number of speakers and speaker output. Some car models have more than 2800W, and I bet it won’t be long before we see cars with 3000.

ADAS

Onvo L90

Onvo calls its L2 ADAS “OSD”. It features 26 sensors, including two ultra-high-res cameras, nine cameras, 12 ultrasonic radars, and one millimeter-wave radar. A Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295P with 254 TOPS takes care of the calculations. The Onvo L90 doesn’t have a lidar.

Specifications of the Onvo L90

Onvo L90

The Onvo L90 is based on NIO’s NT 3.0 platform with a 900V architecture. It is a large vehicle: 5145/1998/1766, with a 3110 wheelbase. The L90 is famous for its massive 430-liter frunk. It also has a 430/1214 liter trunk. The car in the photos is the L90 Ultra, with a dual-motor AWD powertrain.

The output is 440 kW (599 hp) and 535 Nm, good for a 200 km/h top speed and a 0-100 acceleration of 4.7 seconds. The curb weight is 2360 kg. It has an 85 kWh CALB swappable battery pack for a 570 km CLTC range. A swap takes about 3 minutes. Onvo uses NIO’s battery-swap network. Fast-charging takes 25 minutes, and that’s a bit slow compared to its competitors.

Pricing

Onvo L90

Pricing at NIO Inc. is always a bit complicated. The Onvo L90 Ultra costs 299.800 yuan ($42K). With Battery as a Service (BaaS), it costs 213.800 yuan ($30K) + 899 yuan ($127) per month to lease the battery. Either way, that’s a lot of car for the money, and it ain’t no wonder that the Onvo L90 sells so well in China.
