Deepal G318: Off-road EREV SUV With 316 kW

Here’s a Deepal G318, seen on a very hot summer’s day in Beijing. The G318 is a large off-road-style SUV with an EREV powertrain. The car in the photos is painted in Canyon Black and fitted with the standard five-spoke alloy wheels.

The Deepal G318

Deepal G318

The Deepal G318 is a cool mid-size SUV with a wild off-road-style design. The name comes from the China National Highway G318, which runs from Shanghai to Tibet.

Deepal G318

The G318 has all the typical off-road SUV elements: a boxy body, large bumpers, wide fenders, a roof rack, and big off-road tires. The Deepal G318 is probably one of the best-looking cars in the off-road SUV segment in China.

The cabin is spacious and light, with a sturdy and luxurious design. It has real leather seats, leather trim in various colors, and some smaller metal bits thrown in the mix.  There’s a large storage area below the center tunnel, with enough space for a purple tissue box.

The drive selector’s design is super cool; it looks like an old-school gear lever. It is made out of metal with a leather grip. The same leather is on the 3-spoke, perfectly round steering wheel. It has a 10.25-inch driver’s display and a 14.6-inch touch screen. Below the screen is a set of buttons that control the air conditioning, volume, and the alarm lights.

Lots of head and legroom in the rear. The G318 also has a panoramic sunroof, a 16-speaker audio system, and ambient lighting.

Design details

The G318 has pretty gray-black five-twin spoke wheels.

There’s a silhouette of the G319 stamped in the wheel.

The Deepal G318 has four search lights integrated in the roof rack. Deepal calls this setup the “Array high beam + Camping light”.  The lights are coupled to the high-beam switch, which seems perfect for blinding everybody else on the road. Alternatively, drivers can also use the lights for camping and other outdoor fun.

Specifications of the Deepal G318

Deepal G318

The Deepal G318 is an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV). Deepal sells RWD and AWD variants. The car in the photos is a 2024 Deepal G318 AWD Air Suspension model. The powertrain combines a 105 kW/220 Nm 1.5 turbo range extender with two electric motors with an output of 316 kW/572 Nm. It has a 185 km/h top speed, and it does 0-100 in 6.3 seconds.

The G318 has a 60-liter fuel tank and a 35.07 kWh LFP battery. Deepal claims a range of 174 km in EV mode, which isn’t very impressive compared to the competition. Deepal hasn’t disclosed the combined range. Fast-charging at 400V takes 30 minutes.

For off-roading, Deepal equips the G318 with adaptive air suspension and a differential lock. The approach angle is 27 degrees, and the departure angle is 31 degrees. The ground clearance is maximal 240 mm.

Size: 5010/1985/1960, 2880. Curb weight is a hefty 2360 kg. The boot space is 818 liters and 1747 liters with the rear seats down. There’s no frunk.

Pricing in China

The G316 has a tow hook with a maximum towing capacity of 1.6 tons — enough for a boat or a small camper. When new, the Deepal G318 AWD Air Suspension version cost 218,800 yuan, or about $30K. That may not sound like much, but in China’s hyper-competitive market, the G318 is actually pricey compared to its closest rivals. Combined with its limited electric range, that has made it a relatively slow seller.
