Here’s a Beijing BJ40L 70 Anniversary Edition, seen at a car market in Beijing in 2023. The big off-road machine looked great, almost as new. It stands next to the larger BJ90 SUV.

Beijing is a Chinese car brand owned by BAIC, named after the Chinese capital. The Beijing brand has two series: ‘Beijing’ for sedans and SUVs, and ‘Beijing Offroad’ for 4x4s. Of course, the Beijing BJ40L is part of the Beijing Offroad series.

The Beijing BJ40L is a five-door off-road-capable 4×4 SUV. It debuted in 2014 and received a facelift in 2019. In 2024, Beijing replaced it with the all-new second-generation Beijing BJ40.

The BJ40L 70 Anniversary Edition

The BJ40L 70th Anniversary Edition launched in 2019. It was a special edition to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China. It was based on the facelifted model. The Beijing brand also contributed dozens of vehicles to the massive military parade, held on October 1 in central Beijing.

The BJ40L 70th Anniversary Edition came in a matte army-green color, with gold-plated brand and type logos, with black alloy wheels, darkened windows, a 70th Anniversary spare wheel cover, and super cool 70th Anniversary badges on the front fenders showing the Tiananmen Gate in Beijing.

Beijing embroidered the same badge on the seats. The interior of the 70th Anniversary Edition featured extra luxurious touches compared to the standard car, including black leather seats and leather & aluminum trim. A lucky charm in the shape of a traditional hand fan hangs from the rearview mirror. It had large round air vents and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen.

Power

The Beijing BJ40L used a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. It had an output of 231 hp and 345 Nm, good for a 160 km/h top speed. The fuel tank held 75 liters, a lot compared to other 4x4s. The fuel cap is on the left rear fender.

Gold-plated logos. The characters below are 北京汽车, Běijīng Qìchē, Beijing Auto. The owner added a red China sticker, which goes well with the car’s overall theme. In 2019, the Beijing BJ40L 70th Anniversary Edition cost 204.900 yuan.

The Beijing BJ40L is a popular car among off-road enthusiasts in China. There are many clubs and modification companies. In Beijing, these clubs regularly go to drive off-road in the grasslands north of the Great Wall.
