Huayang BHQ 6361B MPV Was A Really Cool Minivan From China

Huayang BHQ 6361B MPV

This is a Huayang BHQ 6361B MPV. I saw it on the 2003 Changchun Auto Show in Jilin Province in China, and at the time I thought it was the coolest minivan in the world. I even decided, were they ever to sell it in Beijing, I would buy one.

In 2003 the one-child policy was still on, so advertisements always featured 3-p families.

The seven-seat Huayang BHQ 6361B MPV was made by a company called Huayang Auto, based in the great city of Wuhu in Anhui Province. The vehicle was based on the Daihatsu Hijet Gran Cargo, a variant of the tenth generation Daihatsu Hijet Cargo/Atrai (S320, S330). Huayang Auto had an official license from Daihatsu to make and sell the Gran Cargo in China.

Ultra cool ‘Huayang Anhui’ decal.

Shiny mirrors are always cool!

The engine was a Daihatsu 1.1 liter petrol, but it was manufactured in China by the Liuzhou Machinery Factory. Output was 51 hp, good for a 105 km/h top speed. Gearbox was a five-speed manual.

Sadly, the Huayang BHQ 6361B MPV never made it to Beijing, but they did sell it in the south. In Guangdong, it sold for only 42,800 yuan, which was definitely within my budget at the time.

Even more sadly, Huayang Auto didn’t last long. In 2005 they were in financial trouble, and Lifan Auto took over the company. Daihatsu had no interest in dealing with Lifan, terminated the license deal, and prdouction came to a halt. A bad end for the coolest minivan in China. I would have been so cool in the BHQ 6361B MPV in Beijing. Going to work in this thing. Man… I would have been King.
