This is a first generation Volkswagen LT28 van, painted in a fading yellow, with very old wheels, and equipped with a cooling system. What did it carry? German beer perhaps..?
The Volkswagen T28 (LT, Type 28) was a light commercial vehicle made from 1975 until 1991. It was never sold in China and this example is the first one I have ever seen in country.
It had Lohmann Export stickers on the doors and rear. Lohmann is a typical German name, and there are many companies with Lohmann in their name. Sadly I have been unable to find out anything about “Lohman Export”. If you know more, please let me know in the comments below.
The interior was a bit dusty but in general in a good shape.
The LT28 was available with various petrol en diesel engines, including units from Audi and Perkins. The most powerful engine was a D24T 2.4 liter six in line turbo-diesel with 101 hp and 195 Nm. Transmission was a 4-speed manual in the early cars, and a 5-speed manual in later cars.
Large two-spoke steering wheel with a small Volkswagen badge on the horn. Seat covers are Chinese after-market.
That is an old wheel! Tire and wheel cover look like they date from 1975. Collector’s items.
There are two cooling units on the roof. The front unit, in yellow, seems as old as the car. But the cover of the rear unit was definitely added later.
The LT28 badge.
Bumper on the right side fixed up with duct tape. That stuff is good for everything.
License plate is of Liaoning Province up in the northeast.
A very interesting Volkswagen van. I will update if I find out more.
