Xpeng X9 Performance Is A Speedy Chinese Electric MPV

This is the 2025 Xpeng X9 Performance, seen in Beijing. The giant machine looks more like a spaceship than a car, especially in this pretty Nebula White color, combined with darkened windows and gray aero wheels.

About Xpeng

Xpeng is a Chinese New Energy Vehicle brand, founded in 2014 and based in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province. The brand sells seven models in China right now, including the crazy Xpeng P7 sedan and the Xpeng G7 SUV. Sales are okay. In 2025, Xpeng sold 383.873 cars, for a market share of 1.61% and 22nd place in the brand sales rankings.

The Xpeng X9

Xpeng X9

The Xpeng X9 is a full-size seven-seat MPV, launched in 2023. Initially, it was electric-only. However, in late 2025, Xpeng added an EREV variant to the lineup. The car in the photos is a 2025 Xpeng X9 Pure Electric AWD Performance Max model. That’s a long name, even in Chinese (小鹏X9 2025款 纯电 702四驱高性能Max), so it is mostly referred to as the Xpeng X9 Performance.

Xpeng X9

The Xpeng X9 is a crazy-looking car. It has a super short front overhang, a steeply raked windscreen, relatively small windows for an MPV, and wild surfacing all over its body panels. I think it’s a looker, but it is a polarizing design, and some folks passionately hate it. The X9 has frameless windows, hidden door handles, and large sling doors on each side. The aero wheel covers are standard, and the wheel size is 235/50 R20.

The interior

The Atmosphere Gray interior is spacious and luxurious. It has Nappa leather seats, some classy wood trim, and aluminium detailing. A lucky charm hangs from the mirror. The pillow covers are standard in the Xpeng X9. Below the center tunnel is a large storage area, big enough for a couple of tissue boxes.

The A and B-pillars are quite wide, so the small window is really necessary. The Xpeng G9 has a 10.25-inch driver’s display and a huge 17.3-inch 3K touch screen.  The two-spoke oval-shaped steering wheel is a typical Xpeng design element, with a thick rim and a flat bottom. At the center tunnel are two air-cooled 50W wireless chargers and two heated & cooled cup holders.

The best seats are in the second row, with two wide captain seats with a massage function, leg rests, and tray tables. The legroom is enormous! In the rear is a 3-seat bench. The Xpeng X9 is furthermore equipped with a 23-speaker audio system with a 2180-watt output. To make proper use of it, passengers can sing karaoke via wireless microphones, using the Xpeng karaoke app in the infotainment system.  In-car karaoke is important in China; almost every new car has it these days.

Specifications of the Xpeng X9 Performance

The Xpeng X9 is based on the SEPA 2.0 platform with an 800V architecture. It is a giant vehicle: 5293/1988/1785, with a 3169 millimeter wheelbase. The X9 Pure Electric AWD Performance Max has a twin-motor AWD powertrain. The output is 370 kW (503 hp) and 640 Nm.

Xpeng claims a top speed of 200 km/h and 0-100 in 5.7 seconds. That’s impressive for a car with a 2554 kg curb weight.

The battery is a CALB NMC unit with a 105 kWh capacity, the power consumption is 16.9 kWh per 100 kilometers, and that means a 702-kilometer CLTC range. Charging (10-80%) takes 20 minutes.

Price

Xpeng X9

When new, the Xpeng X9 Pure Electric AWD Performance Max sold for 339.800 yuan, or about $47K using the 2025 exchange rate. The Performance model is quite rare compared to the front-wheel drive models, which had less power but were much cheaper. Not everybody needs 370 kW in a family MPV, I guess.
